Lipodissolve

What is Lipodissolve?

Lipodissolve is a non-surgical procedure in which chemicals are injected into unwanted fat deposits, to essentially melt  away the fat. It has been growing in popularity rapidly since the mid- 2000’s in the U.S. as a non surgical alternative to Liposuction.

How Lipodissolve works?

Lipodissolve works by disrupting the fat cells and emulsifying the contents. The emulsion is then excreted from the body as waste, resulting in fat reduction in the treated area, while at the same time newly laid down collagen tightens the overlying skin. The techniques, efficacy, and side effects of lipodissolve have been the subject of several reports over the past decade.

How many treatments will be required to achieve best results?

For small fatty deposits one to two treatment sessions are typically required, however in mid-size areas 3-4 treatment sessions are more common. Larger areas may need 6 or more sessions to achieve optimal results.

How effective is this treatment?

A small area may show results a month after a treatment session, while a large area will generally require several treatment sessions before visible results can be noticed. Since fat cells are permanently removed from the treated area, future weight gain will tend to occur more evenly rather than in focal areas.

What are the primary ingredients in Lipodissolve?

Phosphatidylcholine and Sodium Deoxycholic acid are the primary ingredients in lipodissolve, as well as other fat dissolving injections.

What is Phosphatidylcholine and where does it come from ?

Phosphatidylcholine is a phospholipid extracted from soybean lecithin present in abundance in cell membranes, actively participating in the structure and transport between the cells.

What  does Phosphatidylcholine do? What does Sodium Deoxycholic Acid do?

Phosphatidylcholine  can alter cholesterol and other triglyceride metabolisms. It seems to be able to increase cholesterol solubility, alter the composition of fat deposits, and inhibit plaque aggregation. For these reasons, phosphatidylcholine is used in the intravenous treatment of lipid atheromas, hypercholesterolemia, fat embolism, fatty deposits or plaque adhering to arterial walls, mental disturbances, hepatic and cardiac conditions induced by medication, alcohol, pollution, virus, and toxins.

Sodium Deoxycholic Acid is responsible for the emulsion process which leads to the removal of the excess waste from the body.

Where did the cosmetic use of Phosphatidylcholine originate from?

The cosmetic use of phosphatidylcholine originated in Italy. Its first use for such purposes was reported by an Italian physician named Sergio Maggiori, at the Fifth International Meeting of Mesotherapy in 1988, held in Paris, France. He presented his work with phosphatidylcholine in the treatment of xanthelasmas. In Brazil, the cosmetic use of phosphatidylcholine began at the end of the 1990s on an off-label basis.

What steps are taken after the procedure to ensure safety?

In some cases icing the area for 4 to 5 minutes seemed to may reduce immediate stinging and pain. Phosphatidylcholine and Sodium Deoxycholic Acid injections are placed 1.5cm apart and at a depth of the middle of the fat pad and slightly more superficially in cases of cellulite to provide better skin tightening

Is the procedure painful and are there side effects ?

All patients had some stinging and pain during, and for 30 minutes after, the procedure, which was reduced among the patients who received 4 to 5 minutes of icing before the procedure. Mild swelling and bruising developed in almost all patients, but mostly subsided within  days. The overall results differed somewhat depending upon the volume of solution with each treatment.

Possible side effects (Especially in HIV patients) include Erythema, Edema, and/ or pain at the injection site. In addition, some patients have seen nodules at the injection site.

Here is a article written by the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, in 2003 that gives some background on Lipodissolve. However, we have seen progress in the safety and efficiency of Lipodissolve since the article was published.
